BLOG: UK Game Expo, Cookies and Orson Scott Card

We’ve entered the convention season. I just came back from Pyrcon, next week I am going to UK Game Expo, and in U.S. geeks and publishers have BGG Spring, Origins, and The Dice Tower con on the horizon. Everything builds up to the biggest of them all – Gen Con.

A convention is a place where I meet with Portal Games fans. We all – I mean publishers, designers, vloggers – say that we love to meet you, we love to talk to you, we love to take selfies with you, but the one thing is saying that and the other is you believing it.

Often at the convention, I see a geek who is on edge to approach me, but he is not sure if he should. He or she is hesitating.

Quite by accident, a few years ago I came up with this cookie thing. It immediately went viral. Everybody knows now that Ignacy loves cookies and suddenly the barrier to meeting him is gone. So many of you approach me saying something like ‘I brought you cookies. BTW: can you sing my game?’

No longer you guys are hesitant to approach, no longer you debate if I sign your game. You bring cookies, you smile, and that is a pretty good start to a good conversation.

Next week I will be at UK Game Expo, and although I have all day meetings on Friday and Saturday, I will be available to you the whole Sunday at Portal Games booth. I am ready for signing games, I am ready for selfies and – you bet – I am ready for your cookies.

Meet me there. Don’t hesitate. I am flying to Birmingham precisely for you.

And the whole idea for the post came to me last weekend at Pyrcon. I was sitting at the table with Merry and suddenly to the table next to us came Orson Scott Card, guest of honor at Pyrcon. Orson is in my top 5 favorites SF writers of all time. I am a huge fun. And guess what, I was debating. And guess what, I was hesitating.

And guess what, I ducked.

I did not tell him how much I love his books. One thing is knowing that designers and writers like to meet fans, the other believing it at this very moment when they stand next to you.

Bring cookies. It helps.

Welcome to PORTAL GAMES

We are bookworms. Movie maniacs. Story addicts. We grew up reading Tolkien, Howard, Herbert, Dick, Lem… We were watching Willow, Blade Runner, Never Ending Story, Robin Hood…

And yet, we don’t write books… we don’t make movies. We don’t make those things, because we make games. We make games that tell stories.
