ARTICLE: About the Master Set

We are only a few weeks away from the retail release of the 51st State Master Set. The game hits retail on the 25th of May! Be sure to ask your local game store to order yours! Pre-orders began arriving last week and there has been some confusion about what will be in the retail edition versus what was available for pre-order customers. 1 – The retail version absolutely DOES include wooden tokens. The pre-order tokens were different in that they had some 3d reliefs cut into them and some accents painted on. The retail version will contain regular, high-quality wooden tokens just like our other products. 2 – The retail version contains all 4 basic factions. These are the base factions intended ...

ARTICLE: It’s a Mystery

The 51st State campaign is going great, so today, we take a step back in time and check out one of Ignacy’s older articles. This one is all about designing the New Era expansion for 51st State and it applies to the Master Set as well… because it’s included! Good times.   Have you seen Shakespeare in Love? As the bubonic plague breaks out, the Crown orders the complete closure of all theatres in London. Suspended performances, unemployed actors, audience in despair. And what about an investor who had put all the money in the show? He is furious to say at the least. Catching the play’s director on one of the streets of London he demands an explanation. Now! He had invested a lot of money and was counting on fat profits. ...

ARTICLE: The Evolution of 51st State cards

Today’s “read” is more visual than most. We are extremely proud of the look of the new edition of 51st State and we wanted to share with you the long process that Scorn went through to come to the final design. We start at the beginning, and arrive at the end through the history of his design process. Enjoy!   51 en from Ignacy Trzewiczek

ARTICLE: 51st State is NOT Imperial Settlers

It’s true, there are many similarities between Imperial Settlers and 51st State. Imperial Settlers was designed as a light-hearted update to the award winning 51st. This year, 51st State is getting a new skin and boy has the reaction been interesting. For us, it’s awesome that fans of the game are so passionate about changes to their beloved game.   But…   To set the record straight, the 51st State Master Set is NOT a re-theme of Imperial Settlers. It is very different and I’ll explain why.   1. The Pace of the Game In Imperial Settlers you have 5 rounds. Always. You get to build your engine and easily calculate what each card is likely to provide you ...

ARTICLE: Let Me Provoke a Question

Some of the hardcore fans of the first edition of 51st State complain that Rule of 3 got removed from the new edition of 51st State. Let me today provoke brainstorming with me. Let’s discuss this topic. Rule of 3 and Deals. Rule of 3 says you have 3 spaces for Deals and/or Spoils in your HQ. If you wanted to have at least one free space for Spoils – and we all know that you indeed wanted it – that meant you actually had space for only two Deals. Right? So you guys were able to use this whole mechanism of making Deals, managing blue Contact Tokens and all that shit dedicated to Deal action twice in a ...

ARTICLE: Master Set – Boring Stuff, Boring Article

So Master Set, huh? Let’s talk about building this baby! 51st State had 110 cards including Location cards, Connection cards and Leader cards. The New Era had 110 cards including Location cards and Connection cards. No Leaders though. Some of these cards were exact reprints of cards from 51st State. Winter expansion had 52 cards including Location cards, Connection cards and Leader cards again. Are you following me? You don’t look like you do. Anyway, that was a starting point. 272 cards. Big freaking mess. So I took a huge two handed hammer and I put it into work. Big hammer. Work. You got picture? *** First I rebuilt base ...

ARTICLE: I am a Lunatic

We are a few weeks into the 51st State pre-order campaign and it’s going great. Yesterday, we posted the rulebook for everyone to see and asked that you check it out and let us know if you like it and if you find any problems. Over the next few days, we will focus our attention on providing you with even more information about 51st State. Today, we start at the beginning. If you’ve read Boardgames That Tell Stories blog, you might have already read this one… but it’s good. I suggest re-reading it.       I rush into the house, toss my briefcase in the corner and run to my desk to get some sheets of paper. “Daddy, daddy!” Lena’s voice comes ...

Welcome to PORTAL GAMES

We are bookworms. Movie maniacs. Story addicts. We grew up reading Tolkien, Howard, Herbert, Dick, Lem… We were watching Willow, Blade Runner, Never Ending Story, Robin Hood…

And yet, we don’t write books… we don’t make movies. We don’t make those things, because we make games. We make games that tell stories.
