Portal Games to release Wrath of the Lighthouse, a new expansion for Empires of the North, in September 2022

KNURÓW, POLAND (February 14, 2022)

Portal Games is happy to announce Wrath of the Lighthouse, a new expansion for the hit game Empires of the North, to be released in September 2022.

Wrath of the Lighthouse is the 5th expansion in the extensive lineup of Empires of the North. The expansion brings a unique solo campaign consisting of 15 different scenarios, all tied by one branching story told in the narrative paragraphs. As the player makes the progress in the game the outcome of each scenario impacts what happens next and how his faction develops further.

Apart from the narrative element, the expansion also adds several new mechanisms. A new deck of Event Cards influences the harvest action and the outcome of the expedition phase. New location cards increase the variety, while some of them offer an upgrade option. The expansion also brings a completely new type of worker to the game.

The campaign is recorded on the progress sheet. What’s interesting, failing one scenario doesn’t stop the game. Instead, it may let the story progress in another direction. The final result of the campaign, that is failing or losing, is determined on the basis of the partial results from all the scenarios as marked on the progress sheet.

Wrath of the Lighthouse can be played with almost every faction released for the game and the branching storyline allows for the repeated play of the entire campaign.

Empires of the North is a popular competitive engine-building civilization-themed board game for 1 to 4 players, where each player controls one of the differently playing factions. The game employs popular mechanisms of tableau building, worker placement, and resource management. Players develop their civilizations, harvest resources, and explore other islands while trying to maximize the opportunities given by unique to their faction deck of cards.

Empires of the North was first published in 2019 and translated into 11 languages selling worldwide. In the following years, it was further developed by four expansions – Japanese Islands, Roman Banners, Barbarian Hordes, and Egyptian Kings – which increased the number of differently playing factions in the game from 6 to 14.

Wrath of the Lighthouse is scheduled to be released in September 2022. With the new expansion Portal Games once again proves its commitment to fully developing its game designs and providing a great gaming experience to all players, including those looking for great solo modes.

“Wrath of the Lighthouse is our special present to all the fans who love solo gaming.”, said Ignacy Trzewiczek, President of Portal Games. “Combining sound and trusted game design of Empires of the North with the original writing results in an extraordinary gameplay experience and shows how dedicated we are to deliver Board Games That Tell Stories.”

Welcome to PORTAL GAMES

We are bookworms. Movie maniacs. Story addicts. We grew up reading Tolkien, Howard, Herbert, Dick, Lem… We were watching Willow, Blade Runner, Never Ending Story, Robin Hood…

And yet, we don’t write books… we don’t make movies. We don’t make those things, because we make games. We make games that tell stories.
