New revised edition of Basilica by Portal Games

We’re excited to announce the publishing of a new revised edition of Basilica, a quick tile-laying game for 2 players set in medieval Florence. Basilica, designed by Łukasz M. Pogoda, was first published in 2010 and further developed by the expansion Festum Fatuorum in 2012. The new edition by Portal Games includes the base game with a revamped game board, custom wooden tokens, and the expansion, offering a premium and full game experience.

Basilica is an abstract 2-player game with easy to learn rules and heavy player interaction. The players take on the roles of competing architects overseeing the construction of a magnificent cathedral. Each turn, players place tiles to enlarge the cathedral and create areas of a single color, while also placing builder pawns on tiles in order to gain advantages and control areas. In addition, players execute orders to move or remove builders, increase abilities, block spaces, or tear down parts of the cathedral that were built earlier. Points are scored three times during the game, and after the third scoring, the game ends.

The expansion, Festum Fatuorum, introduces additional cathedral tiles and new altar tokens, increasing the complexity of the game.

Despite the abstract nature of the game, Basilica’s medieval setting shines through with the usage of custom-made wooden pawns depicting builders, the queen, and coins. The images that are screen printed on the wooden pieces resemble those found in the medieval books and other historical sources.

Basilica will be published in English and Polish. The game will premiere at Essen Spiel in October 2022.

Welcome to PORTAL GAMES

We are bookworms. Movie maniacs. Story addicts. We grew up reading Tolkien, Howard, Herbert, Dick, Lem… We were watching Willow, Blade Runner, Never Ending Story, Robin Hood…

And yet, we don’t write books… we don’t make movies. We don’t make those things, because we make games. We make games that tell stories.
