First Martians features a unique follow-up mechanism to create a deeper, more engaging story. Some events in the game have follow-ups – occurrences that happen some time after and are independent of players’ actions. They are always closely connected to the original event and help build a coherent storyline. For example, if the crew members talk about the relatives left on Earth, their morale will drop. After some time it may turn out that feelings of sorrow and regret – a consequence of your discussion – made one of you a burden rather than an asset.

There are two campaigns included in the box. Each is a chain of 5 missions with an overarching plot for you to discover. The first one is a story of astronauts struggling with unreliable communication – use your equipment and resourcefulness to restore and maintain a link between your base and Earth. The second one is strictly a legacy campaign – you will use its components only once. The campaign begins with a new team of astronauts landing on the Red Planet – after the first two successful years of the project your Martian colony is about to expand. The game will present you with some tough choices – and their irreversible consequences.

fm_preorder_legacy-campaignWe have prepared a number of stretch goals to upgrade your copy of First Martians. We’re counting on you – help us make them happen! We will reveal them as more orders are placed. Additional components and extra content will be added if you help us with this huge and fascinating project. With your help, we’ll add more stretch goals in the weeks to come.

the_app

The components in the box are complemented by a our free app which contains hundreds of events and adventures to immerse you in the story. The app guides you through the storyline, providing information about the results of your actions or various happenings in the HUB – and is also the means of communication between your settlement and the Mars Colonization and Expansion Initiative (MCEI) on Earth. The in-built mechanisms allow you to adjust the gameplay experience to your needs by choosing a mission type or difficulty. When you choose a mission type (for standalone missions only), you decide whether you want to be a scientist, an explorer, or an engineer – different mission have different goals and rely heavily on research, exploration, or building skills. Choosing one of three difficulty levels affects the consequences of in-game events. Whether you are a hard-core gamer looking for extreme experiences or a casual player more interested in the story, the difficulty options will tailor the gameplay to your needs. Also, the app makes future updates and adding new content easier.

Welcome to PORTAL GAMES

We are bookworms. Movie maniacs. Story addicts. We grew up reading Tolkien, Howard, Herbert, Dick, Lem… We were watching Willow, Blade Runner, Never Ending Story, Robin Hood…

And yet, we don’t write books… we don’t make movies. We don’t make those things, because we make games. We make games that tell stories.
